Jan 14 - Intro to Somatics - Naomi Sparrow
Open (body) space is a series of classes, each one its own offering based on a practice of listening to our own bodies. We hope to free and empower our inherent intelligence, open new pathways in movement and mind, and tap into our embodied wisdom. This first class provides an introduction to the field of Somatics through the form of Body-Mind Centering.
Jan 21 - Introduction to Patterning - Naomi Sparrow
Midline structures and “core patterning.” In Somatic practices, we cultivate awareness of patterns. Some patterns are helpful while others arise out of a “compensation” for lack of support, tone, or integration. Through the experiential anatomy and developmental movement practices of Body-Mind Centering, we will play in the midline and find how we can re-pattern with ease.
Jan 28 - Authentic Movement - Judith Kerridge
Open the space, hold the space, allow yourself the luxury of moving exactly how you want to move, without judgement. Let the body move as it will and process the feelings that emerge.
Feb 4 - Intro to Contact Improv - Ian! Allen
Our first language is touch. This class will help you recognize that everything either is Contact Improvisation or can be turned into Contact Improvisation. Overcome the "Subway Reflex" that makes you recoil from contact. Build a non-verbal movement vocabulary that you can use to amaze your friends. Recapture your physical relationship to other humans!
Feb 11 - Continuum - Kristine Karpinski
Pioneered by Emilie Conrad, Continuum focuses on fluid movement. Using sound, breath, motion and awareness, Continuum opens potential for an amplification of wave action within the body. This allows the body to resonate and function as ‘one undulating stream of intelligence’, awakening transformative and renewal energies in the body matrix.
Feb 18 - Meridian Stretch - Alexis Andrew
Developed by Shiatsu master Masunaga, the Meridian stretches (sometimes known as Meridian yoga) are a simple and yet profound way to access power and strength in your dancing. We will explore some of the stretches and use the energy and awareness they help to cultivate to support solo and group dancing.
Feb 25 - Ortho-Bionomy® + The Chakras - Judith Miller
Honour the body's inner wisdom. Play with physical and energetic movement preferences to open the door to greater balance and connection. The exploration will draw on the principles of Ortho-Bionomy® and The Chakras.
Mar 4 - Soul Song - Jeremy Sills
We invite the whole Self into the present moment, through the sounds of bowls, chimes, drums and melody, and give voice to the soul....soul song.....as we call in the muse, and freeing the artist within each of us...to inspire and re-create the perception/lens with which we see the world......anew.
Mar 11 - Body Mind Centering® - Naomi Sparow
Explore sounding and moving freely. The voice can resonate in many ways: the heart, the bones, tones and shapes fly free in the space. Sounding in relationship forms harmony, as we practice moving, listening, and allowing the voice of the moment to emerge. (this is not a singing class!) No vocal experience necessary!! Silence also welcome.
Mar 18 Spring Equinox Celebration - Anne Pitman
Celebrate the turning of the wheel, breathe in spring. A joyous evening of seasonal dance and yippee!
Mar 25 - Trager® Hook up - Sandra Yanover
Hook-up is the essential state for Trager work, whether on the table or in movement. When we are in Hook-up, perceptions shift and new possibilities arise. Join me in entering Hook-up. Discover how you see, feel, hear and otherwise sense differently when you are in Hook-up, and how that helps support the feelings of freedom, ease and peace.
April 1 - In and Out of Contact - Elizabeth Mackinnon
In this class we will explore non-verbal communication through sight, sound and touch, moving in solo, duets and groups. We will deepen our experience of sensation and awareness while moving and build skills for engaging and disengaging with others. We will look at how to make choices in our dancing, including the skill of maintaining boundaries.
April 8 - The Living Spine - Naomi Sparrow and Anne Pitman.
April 15 - Feldenkrais® - Christine Graves
Nurture awareness...move naturally. Find lightness and balance, fullness and stability in standing, walking and dancing. Know what you are doing and do what you want to do. We start with an Awareness Through Movement lesson and move on from there to what the group needs and finds interesting. Finding your structure in the skeleton as a means of improvement in moving, feeling, thinking and sensing is a good starting point
