Embodied Yoga and Mindfulness with Anne Pitman and David Jewitt

Our retreat takes place at The Rio Chirripo Lodge, nestled at 4000ft in the magnificent Chirripo River valley. There are few places we have ever been that match the beauty and warmth of this magical location. Aside from the perfect temperature, vistas, and extraordinary nature in the area, the lodge itself is an incomparable example of Costa Rican hospitality. From the moment you arrive until your goodbye, you will be bathed in sunshine, sparkling mountain air, love and care to allow for a truly relaxing, life changing experience. Rather than just a typical resort holiday, we want to offer you an unique and fun adventure into La Pura Vida, Costa Rican life, combined with a dynamic heart-centered yoga and mindfulness practice.

Humanizing Healthcare International Conference

If you're a student, attend the pre-conference on October 17th to see Anne speak:

Scared Speechless: Working on Anxiety After a Cancer Diagnosis at 9:45 am in the Garden Room

A cancer diagnosis can shatter “normal” life. There can be so much upheaval that a patient can feel as though they have left their body behind. Anxiety and fear often surface. Both yoga therapy and conscious living coaching are one-on-one mind body therapies that begin an inquiry into the emotional dimensions of cancer, from diagnosis shock, through the anxiety surfacing with regard to chemo, radiation and surgical treatments and side effects to post treatment fear of recurrence. Techniques include breath practices and specific de-patterning movements that help to acknowledge and move held fear and anxiety that prevent all of us from being fully present in our lives. This workshop is particularly useful for anyone working with those facing cancer, from doctors and nurses to social workers, in order to learn simple techniques to unlock trauma and shock in a safe and grounded way, and to help patients return to a feeling of agency, authenticity and calm.

Anne Pitman and Sarah Young will be presenting "The Head Start Program for Women Newly Diagnosed with Breast Cancer" at 2 PM, Wednesday October 19th in the Orangerie Room of the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

“You have breast cancer”. Each woman who hears these words feels as though the rug has been pulled out from beneath her—and that’s just the beginning. Explore the unique mind and body techniques used in the Head Start Program, including visualization, decision-making tools, embodied
yoga and breath work; all of which develop genuinely positive health habits and help women become empowered physically, emotionally and mentally.

A typical day....
After a sound sleep on soft Egyptian cotton sheets, the morning begins with mindfulness meditation instruction with David followed by Anne's embodied somatic yoga practise. A  breakfast of local coffee, freshly baked breads, tropical fruits and original dishes awaits you.
Your day can include hiking in a reserve to a waterfall; horsebackriding on the mountain trails; making your own chocolate bar with an artisan chocolate maker; visiting a small local dairy and cheesemaker; river rafting; beach excursion with surfing (if you dare!); or relaxing at Spa Rio with a Honey Papaya Facial or Lavender Ylang Ylang Massage . A luscious lunch is served each day.
At 4pm there is another workshop/discussion/kirtan diving deeper into body heart mind practise. The evening is a spontaneous fiesta of one kind or another; salsa dancing, sing-a-long around the fireplace; pizza making in the wood burning oven; games or relaxing at the bar with wine or a smoothie. Dinner is always creatively prepared by the wonderful chefs. All meals can include vegan or gluten-free options.

Matthew Remski presents Wawadia: What are we actually doing in Asana

Matthew Remski, CYT, Writer, Ayurvedic Practitioner

Over the past eight years as an asana teacher and Ayurvedic practitioner, Matthew has heard hundreds of stories of classroom or self-practice injury. In January of 2014 he began a formal qualitative research project to catalogue the pedagogical, psychological, and socio-cultural contexts that can make practice less safe. He’ll present stories and themes from the 150+ interviews he has conducted, and moderate a discussion about how we manage and give meaning to discomfort and pain on the mat, and some best practices for creating the best learning environments possible. The book is currently scheduled for publication in the fall of 2017.
